About Kurdish (Kurmanji)

The Kurdish languages are divided into three main dialects - Kurmanji, Sorani and Pehlewani - of which Kurmanji, or Northern Kurdish, is the most widespread and has the highest number of native speakers. Most of these speakers live in Turkey, with others in Iran, Iraq and Syria. Kurdish is an Iranian language and shares some characteristics with Persian, although they belong to different branches of the Indo-Iranian language family.
